This will be hopelessly geeky for some of you and completely normal for others. So it goes.

We spent the Not-Exactly-Mayday weekend in the greater DC/Baltimore metropolitan area. First up to the American Visionary Art Museum. They have plenty of work there by fellow Tarheels Vollis Simpson and Clyde Jones, including a big Vollis whirligig outside. Lots of interesting stuff, including Horse Dress, a psychedelic dress knit by a schizophrenia patient in the 1930s. I also learned about the Occoneechee Trapper's Lodge, a folk art environment created by the late Q.J. Stephenson up near Roanoke Rapids. Must check that out some time, although I've heard it's only open by appointment.

After a quick walk up and down Federal Hill, we were off to spend the rest of our weekend at the Maryland Renaissance Festival and at the home of our wonderful hosts [livejournal.com profile] terribleturnip and the Pirate. At the festival we almost immediately ran into [livejournal.com profile] pyratelady, operating her hammered dulcimer, and [livejournal.com profile] thatliardiego, operating his magic bucket. Later we ran in to BeerPam, who is working at a herbalist booth this year. The Maryland festival is really special; the performers are all paid so they don't have to constantly hustle tips. The site is beautiful, mostly wooded and relatively complex. Some of the people working there have been doing so for decades. We tromped around catching set after set by the Pyrates Royale, because a) they are extremely talented and b) none of their sets are exactly the same. Other good musical acts included Cercamon and E Muzeki. Our friend T.O. was there again, working the Sandlar booth. (Yes, I seem to have become friends with quite a few of the folks I wrote about in that article, now that conflict of interest no longer applies.)

One notable first for us this weekend was going straight from the site to dinner in garb. Not for any reason other than, we didn't have time to change. It felt weird for about five minutes, then I stopped thinking about it. Speaking of garb, we managed to make it out only buying one item, a (kinda expensive) pair of pants.

All of the interstate highways mentioned in the title of this post were extremely kind to us. For the folks headed south on Saturday and north on Monday, it was a different story.

EDIT: The first night we had a fabulous dinner with [livejournal.com profile] terribleturnip, the Pirate, [livejournal.com profile] thatliardiego and BeerPam at Sputnik, which was a lot swankier and nouvelle than I'd imagined a restaurant in the rural pocket near the festival would be. If you're ever in Crownsville, MD, check it out.
