Alternate reality, open on weekends

The me of March 2005 would be extremely shocked to learn that the me of now wrote an article about renaissance fair performers. The original draft was twice as long and included more of a first-person account of me being surprised by how interesting the renfair world is. Also more pseudo-Ballardian sociological observations, and more details about the various performers I interviewed. But I'm fairly pleased with this streamlined version too.

I enjoyed the article, Sir. I don't know if I told you this before, but I used to date a girl who was involved in the "gamer" stream of Ren Faire culture--apparently the folks who run the ring-toss type concession booths and stuff. Her sister toured pretty much all year-round, and she would occasionally meet her and work for a week or two somewhere. Sounded like the gamers were pretty hardcore partiers, unless that was just this particular bunch.

A lot of good things happened during the editing process, but check your inbox.

And, "all that stuff" remains extremely interesting to me too. Even though this article is in the can now, as well as a preview article I did for the local newspaper, I'm still extremely curious about the details of these performers lives. I met some new folks this past weekend and it was hard to control the impulse to quiz them about, oh, everything.
