So, here's me over here, pressing the clutch and thinking about first gear. I suppose I should flist and flock and all that, but it seems a bit silly because as of now the flist is a very elite cadre indeed.

Instead of posting about recent field trips or about how annoying some of my co-workers email sigs are, I will instead transcribe this advertisement from an 1858 newspaper on display in the Museum of the Cape Fear:

PURE, FRESH, CHEAP DRUGS,
Medicines, Paints, Glass, Etc.

Bourbon Whiskey,
which for high proof, delicate flavor, and ripe age, is unsurpassed by any in the market, and is highly esteemed when taken in conjunction with our Cod Liver Oil, as a valuable adjunct to that celebrated and remarkable remedy.

It seems right that you should christen the launch of your lj with bourbon.

I've never considered cod liver oil as a mixer. What do you think such a drink would be called? I mean, besides "bad".

I shudder to think about mixing good bourbon with fish oil. We're living in the future: fish oil comes in handy gelatin capsule form now. And actually, I shudder to think about mixing good bourbon with anything except maybe a little water on occasion. Shudder, I tell you!

Y'know, a bit of that could be good for what's ailing me . . .

There's something for which you need Cod Liver Oil? Seriously, Mister McGregor doesn't even know you were in his garden -- promise.

(ps - yes, I know this is actually castor oil; same difference.)

I was thinking more of the bourbon itself. I have an IV drip for my Cod Liver Oil.

Beatrix Potter scarred me for life.

For years, I listed The Tale of Peter Rabbit as my favorite book. I think we can all see that it's where I started to go wrong.

I don't think I even understood it back then. But I know that Peter's punitive nakedness was deeply unsettling for me--it read as symbolic of so many uglier things.
